Lore and Energy of Apatite
An apatite is a wide group of different but similar minerals usually composed of calcium phosphate. Due to the varied composition of fluorine, chlorine, and hydroxide, it gives apatite gemstones their different coloring. The neon blues may be the most famous of the apatite but this gemstone comes in a whole range of colors, green, brown, softer or darker blues, yellow, pink, violet, and even colorless. In 1786, the mineral was given its name by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner. The name comes from the Greek word apatein, which means, “to deceive or be misleading” because of the stone’s chameleonic quality to look very much like other stones. In fact, it is often confused with some of the more valuable gems such as peridot, topaz, aquamarine, tourmaline, beryl, and olivine depending on their color. Rarely Apatite displays chatoyancy, or cat’s eye effect due to fibrous, needle-like inclusions.
